Irminia's first Strike... PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 August 2006
this video was taken just after the last one, in which young Tenebrus fails to find and catch that little pinhead cricket. Here she has another go, and performs the first strike of her life, and predictably, isn't quite fast enough to catch it.

But they learn, and learn very quickly. The cricket may have made it OK past the 'making of' video, but alas, is now being lunch for the star of the show. Crickets can jump around 20 times their own bodylength to escape predators, a tactic that works nearly 60% of the time. Arboreal spiders must learn to be quicker, or wait for prey to enter an area where jumping is blocked or made harder in some way by the geometry of the surfaces around.
