A small tribute to Steve Irwin
![]()
It is a sad day for animal lovers everywhere. Steve Irwin, of 'Crocodile hunter' fame, and general hero for wildlife everywhere, was tragically killed by a stingray barb to the heart whilst filming a wildlife documentary off the Great Barrier Reef in his native Australia yesterday. Unfortunately, it seems that he had inadvertently boxed the animal in while swimming above it, with the camera man in front, prompting it to panic and strike. I am, of course surprised, and much saddened by his death, and feel the need to to share with you all that I think we've lost a truly 'decent bloke' there. I have always admired him, and his continuing efforts to protect his native rainforest, and bring the wonder of animals, and animal conservation to as many people as possible. What has been clear to me is that despite his apparent 'dangerous' stunts, which, let's remember, are there to attract people to the subject in the first place in the most wide-ranging and effective way, he always maintained a respect, and genuine concern for the animals he was showing us, and it was clear he had a real passion for what he was doing, that was infectious, and genuine. So there goes, I feel, a person who not only kept on reaching their full potential, and then expanding the boundaries to allow ever greater achievements, but also someone that used that potential, and the fame and money that came with it, to do some really very good things. I sincerely hope those close to him will be comforted by support from his legions of fans around the world, and that they will carry on the good work he did with the same enthusiasm. I do not doubt either for a second. Goodbye, and great job, Steve Irwin.
