Binky flicks PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 August 2006
Its Binky again, this time caught on night-cam flicking some hair off his opisthosoma. This may indicate a coming moult.

There is, however, a clear difference in the type of flicking going on, and what's happening to the hairs, although you can't really see it here... If the spider was feeling threatened, and was trying to kick hairs at an intruder, then it would deploy them in a rising cloud from the T's back.

But here, the legs flick downwards, depositing the hairs on the tank floor next to him. It may be that he does this as the new hairs from underneath in readiness to moult again, and this causes some discomfort. They can also shed hairs to line webbing with, assumedly so that the burrow is protected from nosing animals, but L.parahybana don't tend to do that much I have noticed.
