Welcome to what I hope is rather an exciting video. Our hero of the day is Binky, my 11th instar (probably) male Salmon Pink Bird eater. He is just past half grown at this point in his life and is around 6" in legspan. Dinner today, which we will watch him locate with little more than his sense of touch to go on, is a 1" hissing cockroach. A quick warning for those of a sqeamish disposition, there are moments in this video that are most definitely not nice. But it is interesting, and we get to see the whole process from the catching, which, for a change is not based on the movement of the prey, to the multiple strikes, which show how dextrous the chelicerae and fangs are, to the the wrapping up, and the spinning of a rather large feeding mat. All that squeezed into 5 mins or so... And all handled with only slightly less dexterity than a spider with all 8 legs would display. One leg less doesn't seem to hold him back too much in this case. I hesitate to say 'enjoy', but here it is... |
