Suck it & See PDF Print E-mail

In only the second video to feature young 'Blue', our favourite baby blue-fang, here we have one of those rare opportunities to see some spider anatomy in action. Today that's the sucking stomach, which Blue will use to ingest some 'liquid gore'(for want of a better expression) that has previously 'leaked' from her recent dinner conquest.

Her venom is rather potent it would seem, as her prey perished almost immediately after being struck. We also get perhaps our first look at the blue chelicerae for which the spider is named...

Other notable facts about this particular spider might include:

  • This is only her second kill - through 1st and 2nd instars she would only accept dead food.
  • She set up home in the smallest possible available gap in the tank I had built for her, from which she hasn't emerged since. not even once.
  • Blue has hardly grown at all despite 2 moults in my care. She arrived just under 1 cm long, and is now about 1.3cm long. Very slow growth rate then.
Dinner only took an hour or so to ingest, so thats another happy spider, and another video to share with you all. Enjoy...
